Splish Splash!
Watch out for mermaids on the beach this summer – it’s the hottest new trend for beach and poolside fun for girls.
Mermaids must be high up there on the list of little girl fixations – just after fairies, unicorns, and Justin Bieber.
I remember the frustration of pretending to be a mermaid with inadequate underwater propulsion. That’s because I was born in the bad old days, before Oceanika released this range of mermaid fins and swimwear.
‘Mermaiding’ is the brainchild of Aussie designer Kazzie Mahina, and the idea was born in Byron Bay – which is obviously where mermaids would choose to live. Here's a video of actual mermaiding:
The key to mermaiding is the MerFin. The MerFin mono-fin is a pool toy, swimming device or fitness accessory – but best of all it allows the wearer to bodysurf through the waves, just like a mermaid. It’s safe to use, leaving the legs free with one flick of the ankle strap. (Bambini recommends close adult supervision during all children’s water sports… and never run with scissors either.)
Of course, no mermaid is complete without tails and scales, which is where the swim tights and scale-pattern bikinis come in. The MerPod package includes the Oceanika MerBabe scale-pattern bikini and MerLegs swim tights, and the crucial MerFin, though all the parts can also be sold separately.

If you’re looking for Christmas gift ideas for little girls, then mermaiding could be this summer’s hot ticket. The full MerPod package is priced as follows: Size 11-1 $159. Size 1-3 $164. Size 3-5 $169. Size 5-7 $174.
